When I went downstairs to check on the kids, The Girl was eating a bowl of blueberry oatmeal with blueberries (we have a stash of frozen blueberries in the freezer we use to cool down her oatmeal) and there was a tub of strawberry ice cream on the table. The Girl said the Brother had gotten

She also said they were doing a good job of "protecting" each other but that she had been doing more "protecting" since the Little Man is notorious for not listening.
What's a mom to do?
A Good mom would have the kids put the ice cream back in the freeze.
I let her scoop a tiny scoop for her oatmeal and a scoop for her brother.
With lots of yays! They set off to eat their breakfast. It turns out, strawberry ice cream in a bowl of blueberry oatmeal is not yummy at all and she's rather have it without. And The Little Man who doesn't like strawberry ice cream, said, "yucky mommy, can (insert his name here) have cereal instead?"
lesson: fulfill the need, it may end up that it wasn't a need after all. No we don't give them carte blanche but we do encourage them to think on their own and to give things a try. you'll never know you like, or don't like, something unless you give it a try.
After brunch, we went over to farmer's market on Larchmont to get some flowers for The Girl's show and tell (she's going to use food coloring in the water to dye the petals of the flowers --no it's not my project she saw it in a magazine and wants to do it herself)

She was very proud to pick out her flowers.

Kid-sized bench on Larchmont. (only in LA, right?)
